A 17-year-old girl with a history of atopic eczema since infancy had no symptom in early primary school ages.
She had recurrence of eczema at the age of ten which gradually spread over the whole body in spite of the treatment with topical corticosteroid ointment.
She visited our hospital in March 1990 when she had 18,400 IU/ml of serum IgE, 100.5 PRU/ml of RAST to dog epithelium, 616 U/L of serum LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), and 1,750 /mm3 of eosinophil counts.

She was found to have been keeping three Yorkshire terriers indoors since the age of nine.
She was admitted the hospital in August 1990, and her eczema alleviated very quickly with topical corticosteroid.
However, as soon as leaving the hospital, her symptom aggravated again.

After she changed her living to nurse dormitory in April 1991, the symptom of her eczema began to become lighter.
On the other hand, in the autumn of 1991, she developed sneezing and sniveling of the nose, congestion of the eyes and reddening and itching of the whole body when she touched her dogs.
This was followed by aggravation of her skin symptom.

In March 1993, her symptom was localized only to the hand. The laboratory data in May 1994 were 1,460 IU/ml of IgE, 3.09 PRU/ml of RAST to dog epithelium, 294 U/L of LDH and 181 /mm3 of eosinophil count.

It was concluded that her symptom improved by avoidance of dog contact.
On the other hand, immediate type allergy was noted to appear more easily after long term avoidance of dog contact that was not observed when she was living with dogs.
